Al Jazeera

A large-scale Russian drone attack in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro has killed three people, including a young girl, according to the regional governor, hours before officials from the United States, Europe and Ukraine gather in Paris to discuss the conflict. Dnipropetrovsk Governor Serhiy Lysak said the attacks that also injured tens of people came late on Wednesday, triggering multiple fires and damaging a dozen apartment buildings. A student residence, an educational institution and a food processing plant were also damaged, Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov added. Photos posted online showed raging fires, burned-out vehicles and buildings with shattered windows and scorched facades, as emergency crews worked through the night. Sixteen of the injured are in hospital, one of them in critical condition, according to Lysak.

A Russian drone attack has killed at least four people and wounded 21 in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro, damaging high-rise buildings and triggering fires in a hotel and homes, the regional governor said, as Moscow claims to have made gains on the ground elsewhere. Late Friday, Russia sent "more than two dozen drones" to Dnipro, the governor of the surrounding Dnipropetrovsk region, Sergiy Lysak, wrote on his official Telegram account on Saturday. "The massive attack caused large-scale destruction and fires. A hotel and restaurant complex, 11 private houses, garages, and a service station were on fire," he said, adding that high-rises and cars were also damaged. Pictures and videos posted online showed flames and large plumes of smoke wafting skyward.

The regional governor said 19 people were injured and a large fire broke out in a hotel and restaurant complex that consumed a high-rise apartment building and 10 homes. Ukraine's military said its air force had struck a border post in Russia's Bryansk region, destroying infrastructure it said was used for drone launches. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said in a statement that the attack was in response to "dozens of daily strikes by attack drones". Ukrainian troops have staged an incursion into Russia's Belgorod region, according to Russian military bloggers.

Regional authorities in northeast Ukraine's Sumy region said Russian drone attacks damaged two hospitals there, while a 29-year-old man was killed and three others were injured in a separate attack on a residential building. Kyiv region's Governor Mykola Kalashnyk said Kremlin drones damaged several houses near the Ukrainian capital, resulting in a 60-year-old man being injured. Ukraine's state railway network Ukrzaliznytsia said Moscow's forces attacked its power system twice in the city of Dnipro, with the first strike hitting just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin committed to a 30-day pause on attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The second attack injured four people. "Russia is attacking civilian infrastructure and people โ€“ right now," said Andriy Yermak, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's chief of staff.

Ukraine's Zaluzhny touts drones as path to victory; Russia suffers strikes

Al Jazeera

Ukraine's commander-in-chief has outlined a plan to massively scale up the use of unmanned systems to overcome Russia's advantages in manpower and materiel and break the deadlock in this war. The effectiveness of such systems was proved again last week as they sank a Russian missile corvette, grounded three planes and set an oil refinery on fire. Russia, too, continued to attack Ukraine with drones and missiles, but it failed to capture new territory despite its superior resources and constant assaults on the eastern city of Avdiivka and Ukraine's stronghold at Krynky on the left bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region. Meanwhile, Ukraine's Western allies made progress on securing funding for the war. The European Union finally approved a 50-billion-euro ( 63bn) aid package for Ukraine, and the United States Senate unveiled a 118bn bill that includes 60bn for Ukraine.

The governor of Russia's Bryansk region accused Ukraine of using cluster munitions against a Russian village near the Ukrainian border. Several houses in the village of Klimovo were damaged, although no casualties were reported. The Ukrainian Air Force said it destroyed 29 of 31 drones and one cruise missile launched by Russia, mostly towards the regions of Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk, during overnight attacks that lasted more than three hours. Falling debris from destroyed Russian drones caused fires in Dnipro and in an industrial enterprise in Pavlograd, two cities in Ukraine's eastern Dnipropetrovsk region. Firefighters managed to extinguish both fires and there were not initial reports regarding victims.

Russia's Belgorod, Ukraine's Dnipro attacked as war escalates

Russia's southern Belgorod region came under attack from Ukrainian artillery fire, mortar shells and drones on Friday, authorities said, days after one of the most daring cross-border attacks since the war began. Hours earlier, two drones attacked a Russian city in a region next to the annexed Crimea Peninsula, officials said. The Kremlin's forces, meanwhile, attacked a medical clinic in Dnipro, in central Ukraine, killing a 69-year-old passer-by and another civilian. More than 20 others were wounded, including two children, Ukrainian officials said. Also, a Russian S-300 missile hit a dam in the Karlivka district of Ukraine's eastern Donetsk province, placing nearby settlements under threat of severe flooding.
